New Anti-Discrimination Office

New Anti-Discrimination Office For Townsville

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Denver Beanland, today officially opened the new premises of the North Queensland Regional Office (Townsville) of the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland (ADCQ).

The National-Liberal Coalition Government established the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland following the withdrawal of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission from Queensland. The first ADCQ Townsville office was opened on Human Rights Day, 10 December 1996, in premises shared with the Department of Justice's Dispute Resolution Centre.

Those original offices were in St James Place, 155-157 Denham Street. The new offices are also in St James Place but are bigger, brighter and better able to service the region stretching from Ingham to the north, to Proserpine and Whitsunday to the south, and west to the State border.

"The work carried out in Townsville by the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland and the Department of Justice's Dispute Resolution Centre is vital in ensuring that all North Queenslanders get a fair-go," Mr Beanland said.

"The opening of these premises reflects the Queensland Government's commitment to human rights service delivery to regional Queensland."

Mr Beanland congratulated both the Anti-Discrimination Commission and the Dispute Resolution Centre on their important work to date and wished the staff of each organisation well in their new shared premises.
